Job Summary/Technical Knowledge

  • 1. General knowledge of a variety of coating types and blast media
  • 2. Knowledge of conventional air-operated sprayers as well as airless sprayers
  • 3. Read, interpret, and follow blueprints and sketches to understand the specifications of a project
  • 4. Strong aptitude and attention to detail
  • 5. Figure material take-offs on drawings for required material quantities
  • 6. Ability to use painting equipment

Job Proficiency

  • 1. Sandblast ships, using spray gun and sandblasting equipment to clean grease, dirt, old paint, and rust from ships
  • 2. Visually inspect surfaces prepared for coating application
  • 3. Prepare surfaces for final coating application, through masking, degreasing, containment, power tool, thinner wiping, brush and rolling, spray painting and blasting
  • 4. Apply coatings to surfaces by use of brush, roller, conventional spray, airless, thermal spray and other specialty coating applications
  • 5. Clean and store paint tools and equipment after use
  • 6. Maintain a clean and organized jobsite free from any unnecessary hazards associated with the work being performed by a paint crew.
  • 7. Measure and mix paint in accordance with specifications
  • 8. Perform general housekeeping and all assigned duties on a jobsite
  • 9. Stencil lettering and other identifying information according to specifications
  • 10. Disassembles paint and sandblasting equipment and cleans equipment, using solvent, wire brushes, and dry cloth
  • 11. Can execute light to medium equipment repairs, including:
  • Repair of air & airless guns
  • Replace or repair sandblast valves
  • Make minor repairs on blast controls
  • Repair sandblast hose ends
  • Change fuel filter on compressor
  • Preventive maintenance and fluid level check on equipment

Culture and Collaboration

  • 1. Follow all shipyard safety policies, including proper use of PPE, fire prevention, and confined space protocols.
  • 2. Assist in the training and development of junior blast/paint technicians
  • 3. Collaborate and communicate with welders, metal fitters, pipefitters, electricians, and other trades as required to complete vessel construction or repair and to maintain efficient work flows
  • 4. Work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced ship production environment
  • 5. Inspect all equipment daily
  • 6. Maintain a clean and safe work area
  • 7. Maintain a positive attitude toward customers and represent Saronic professionally
  • 8. Make a personal commitment and be accountable for HSE results, driving toward the achievement of defined goals
  • 9. Store and dispose of chemicals in accordance with Saronic policies and procedures and Federal, State and Local laws
