Technical Knowledge/Job Summary
- 1. Read, interpret, and follow blueprints and sketches to understand the specifications of a project
- 2. Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
- 3. Figure material take-offs on drawings for required cut lengths
- 4. Mark reference points and transpose them to workpiece using measuring devices, squares, chalk, and/or soapstone
- 5. Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair per specifications
- 6. Ability to use rigging equipment
Job Proficiency
- 1. Cutting (circular, reciprocating, miter, and chop saws), grinding, and assembly of metal structural parts using fitting aids and rigging equipment to align parts according to blueprints
- 2. Tacking and welding of foundations and installing temporary fasteners to hold structural members in place
- 3. Properly implement SMAW (Stick), GMAW (MIG), FCAW (Flux Core), and GMAW-P process (multi-pass) for tack welding as needed
- 4. Properly use oxy-acetylene torch as needed
- 5. Fabricate components using various hand and power tools
- 6. Use pipe cutting machine and/or beveling machine to cut pipe to required length
- 7. Align parts using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and heavy hammers
- 8. Straighten warped or bent parts using sledge, hand torch, straightening press, and push-pull methods.
- 9. Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torch.
- 10. Assemble and secure pipes, tubes, fittings, and related equipment using welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, and threading joints.
- 11. Inspect and test installed systems and pipelines using pressure gauges, hydrostatic testing, observation, or other methods
- 12. Perform layout, fabrication, installation, testing, and repair of pipe systems according to specifications
- 13. Install fittings and equipment
- 14. Install flanges, collars, penetrations, skid frames, foundations
- 15. Install and align large ship machinery
- 16. Install windows and doors
- 17. Install mast
- 18. Inspect all equipment daily (torch, torch hoses, grinder, levels, tapes, etc.)
Culture and Collaboration
- 1. Follow all shipyard safety policies, including proper use of PPE, fire prevention, and confined space protocols.
- 2. Assist in the training and development of junior fitters
- 3. Collaborate and communicate with welders, metal fitters, pipefitters, electricians, and other trades as required to complete vessel construction or repair and to maintain efficient work flows
- 4. Work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced ship production environment
- 5. Maintain a clean and safe work area
- 6. Maintain a positive attitude toward customers and represent Saronic professionally
- 7. Make a personal commitment and be accountable for HSE results, driving toward the achievement of defined goals
